Teaching Philosophy

Time spent in the art classroom is meant for exploration, trial and error, tinkering, and creating. As an educator, it’s my job to give students the time and space to explore different areas of learning and growth, physically, mentally, emotionally, and creatively. I hope to instill the same love for creativity and making that I have, in my students. In doing so, I create a space that is welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and safe. I find that students learn best when they are in a space they feel seen, heard, and validated. My classroom will be a safe space for all who enter, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or identity. If students don’t feel comfortable or welcome in a classroom, they won’t be able to take in any information that is being given to them. So, students first, art second. My goals as an educator while I’m teaching are to be prepared, be open, communicate and listen effectively, as well as, create a safe, respectful, fun environment for students to learn and grow in. In doing so, I must meet the students where they are at when they enter my classroom every day. This means I must understand every student's needs and make my lessons as accessible as possible for each learner. To do so, strong connections and relationships with the students must be made over time through trust, conversations, and connections. The most important aspects of my teaching are keeping an open mind, being prepared, time management, effective communication, and creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all who enter my classroom.
